Our Mission & History

We assist our older community members in maintaining independent and safe lifestyles in their own homes, by providing free rides to medical & therapy appointments and grocery stores.  As an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, we are dedicated to serving seniors in need in Northern Virginia.

The Shepherd’s Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church (SCMAFC) was founded in 2006 by Ed Schrock and is an affiliate of Aging Forward (formerly the Shepherd’s Centers of America). Ed believed that providing transportation service was the key to enabling seniors to remain in their homes.
Ed recruited clients and drivers and arranged for drivers to select requested rides. In 2012 he established a Board of Directors, incorporated the Center, and established its nonprofit status. Subsequent Board Chairs have established committees to recruit, screen, and train drivers and clients. Ride coordinators post the ride requests electronically for drivers to select. As of 2023, there are currently about 80 active drivers and 150 active clients, with well over 3,000 rides provided each year.
